Buying a used car can be a fairly overwhelming experience.

1. The Research

If you do not have a definite car model in your mind, then you would need to do some research. Set a budget and search some car models that fit in your price bracket. Go through the reviews of those models, consult your friends or a mechanic and narrow down your list. After you have focused your search down to a single model, try to get an estimate of its price from multiple dealers or classified advertisements.

2. Initial Inspection

It is always preferable to carry out the initial inspection in ample light to spot minor defects. Checking the bodywork for dents, scratches and other defects is pretty much the standard procedure. Carefully inspect the trunk, music system, upholstery, seats, dashboard, switches, air-conditioning and other general aspects of the car. Check the count on the odometer and cross check it with the year of manufacture of the car.

3. Engine

The most critical part of the whole car is the engine and it is best if you get it checked by a trained mechanic. An engine in good condition would run smooth without much noise and would not give out black or blue smoke.

4. Lifting the Hood

Check for signs of rust, dent or damage under the hood. Also check for cracks on the hoses and belts. Signs of wear and tear near the battery area would indicate poor maintenance. Lift the oil filler cap and check for any white foamy residue, which would indicate a leaking head gasket.

5. Test Drive

Make sure to drive on a variety of road conditions to get the overall feel of the car. Before starting the car, check if the steering wheel turns from one end to the other smoothly. After ignition, carefully listen for any noises the engine might be making. Check the brakes by pressing hard on them at a low speed of 40 km/hr. You should not detect weird noises or vibration from the pedal and neither should the car swerve. Swerving would indicate bad brake calliper or worn our steering components.

6. Literature

Ensure that all the documents like certificate of registration (RC), pollution under control, insurance etc. are authentic and in proper order. Check the service record of the car to ensure that it has been maintained properly in the past. Also check if the engine no. and chassis no. correspond with the number mentioned on the RC.

7. Payment

Used cars always sell below the asking price, so feel free to negotiate depending on the condition of the car. Get proper receipts for any kind of payment you make to the seller.
