Top 10 Features Your Next Car Should Have

Chevrolet Silverado Houston
     Chevrolet Silverado Houston

Used to be that power windows and locks were the epitomy of luxury. Today they are standard on most econoboxes; technology has gifted us with a great many more goodies and gadgets. Here are ten features and options that will make life with your car a lot easier and safer.

1. Remote keyless entry
Keyless entry systems allow you to unlock your car by pushing a button on a remote. The ability to quickly get into your car without fumbling for the key is an important safety feature, especially in poorly-lit areas. With most remotes, pushing the button once unlocks just the driver's door; you must push twice to unlock other doors, so there's no worry about a hidden intruder jumping into the passenger's side. Most also have a panic button that honks the horn and flashes the lights.

2. OnStar System
With OnStar, help from a real-live person is always just a button-push away. Got a flat tire? Someone following you? Just need to hear a human voice? Push the button. OnStar advisors can summon a tow truck or a cop, or just say hello. If your airbags deploy, they call you. They can even track your car if it's stolen and remotely let you in if you're locked out. OnStar charges a monthly subscription fee; the basic plan gives you the most critical safety benefits and is a bargain at $17/month.

3. Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
Simple physics dictates that a turning wheel has more traction than one that is skidding. Antilock brake systems (ABS) watch individual wheel speeds; if one locks up, they pump the brakes far faster than a human could. Don't worry about giving up control to a computer; if the ABS system goes on the fritz (they rarely do) the brakes work normally. Do-it-yourselfers can still do their own brake jobs (though you must relieve system pressure before removing a brake line; check your repair manual).

4. Electronic stability/skid-control system
ESC systems use the anti-lock brake sensors (which show individual wheel speed), accelerometers, and steering wheel/pedal position sensors to figure out what the car is doing and what the driver wants it to do. If the two don't seem to match up, ESC does what no driver can: It applies the brakes to individual wheels and reduces power as needed to keep the car going where the driver is trying to point it. They are almost transparent and work surprisingly well.

5. Telescoping steering wheel/adjustable pedals
Most new cars have height-adjustable (tilt) steering columns; some cars have steering wheels that telescope (move in and out) and/or electrically adjustable pedals. The latter two not only make finding a comfortable position easier, but they allow shorter drivers to safely position themselves farther from the airbag while still keeping their feet comfortably on the pedals.

6. Rear-seat DVD player
Got kids? Movies-on-the-go can make long trips easier for both you and them. Many rear-seat entertainment systems include wireless headphones, so you can enjoy the stereo (or the peace and quiet). My own children would have TVs surgically implanted in the backs of their hands if they could, so in order to avoid turning them into road-going zombies I generally limit movie watching to long trips. They also make a convenient reward and/or dangling carrot.

7. GPS navigation system
Using the Global Positioning Satellite System and sensors in the car, GPS navigation systems can pinpoint your exact location and give you turn-by-turn directions (via a small video screen, spoken voice, or both) to help you find your way. Most will also guide you to the closest gas station, ATM, hospital or police station. They can steer you out of a bad neighborhood, they can route you around traffic, and no matter how lost you get, they can always help you find your way home.

8. Side airbags
Most cars have at least three feet of crush space at the front and back, but only a few inches of protection at the sides. Federally-mandated door beams help keep the car intact instead of caving in. But there's still the problem of inertia: While the car is being pushed away, your body (particularly your head, which isn't secured by the seat belt) wants to stay still, and it could go right through the side window. Side airbags cushion your noggin and help keep it safely inside the car.

9. Center console with power outlet
Open the center consoles on many new cars and you'll find a power outlet (a.k.a. a cigarette lighter without the lighter). These outlets provide a way to charge your mobile phone while keeping it out of sight. I'm dead-set against talking on the phone while driving (though I sometimes do it anyway), but it's good to know you'll always have juice to make a call in case of an emergency.

10. Roadside assistance
Flat tire? Dead battery? Out of gas? Traditionally, people have turned to AAA (US) or CAA (Canada) for life's little motoring emergencies, but many new cars come with roadside assistance as part of their new-car warranty. Several manufacturers even offer it as part of their "certified used" programs. That said, AAA and CAA memberships are inexpensive; with all the travel discounts they bring, your membership may very likely pay for itself.

The Hottest New-Car Features For 2014

Houston Car Dealers
                    Houston Car Dealers

The annals of automotive history are filled with innovations that literally changed the way motorists and passengers interact with their vehicles. A labor-intensive hand crank gave way to the power-operated engine starter. A clumsy steering column-mounted shifter and clutch was supplanted by the automatic transmission. What was initially a behemoth tube-based in-car radio morphed into an in-dash unit that evolved into eight-track and cassette tape decks, compact disc players and finally smartphone connected digital infotainment centers.

Of course not all automakers’ inventions have proved to be successful. Chrysler skipped a beat (literally and figuratively) with its ill-conceived dashboard mounted record player in 1956, while Chevrolet took a slide with its short-lived “liquid tire chain” option in 1969 that sprayed what surely must have been an environmentally unfriendly resin onto the rear tires to help improve their traction on ice.

What were once high-end novelties, like air conditioning, power locks and windows, steering wheel-mounted controls and even Bluetooth hands-free phone interfaces have become standard equipment virtually industry wide. Amenities like heated seats and steering wheels are becoming common among cars in most classes these days, while sophisticated accident avoidance systems like forward collision, blind spot and lane departure warning systems have migrated from top-shelf luxury models down to proletariat midsize and compact sedans.

That leaves automakers – particularly those at the opulent end of the spectrum – with the challenge to develop increasingly fanciful features that help their premium motor cars stand out in a crowded parking lot. How else to explain way-over-the-top  accessories like the backseat champagne cooler offered in the Hyundai Equus or the roof in the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe that’s able to give the illusion of a top-down convertible on a starry night, thanks to a series of 1600 pinpoint fiber optic lights hand-sewn into the headliner.

The 2014 model year brings a fresh assortment of new comfort, convenience and safety-oriented features to consumers, with some destined to be the proverbial Next Big Thing while others will likely languish as novelties. We’re featuring the most innovative of these below and in the accompanying slide show.
In Pictures: The Hottest New-Car Features For 2014.

As before, the most intriguing of these reside in the luxury segment, with the redesigned-for-2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offering an amazing assortment of amenities few of us imagined we could ever live without. It may be easy to dismiss decadent frippery like heated armrests on the doors and center consoles, seats that give the automotive equivalent of a shiatsu hot stone massage and a fragrance dispenser that sends a choice of ambient scents throughout the passenger compartment, but one new feature stands out as a bona fide harbinger of the future. Also offered in the latest Mercedes E-Class, with a similar system available in the new Infiniti Q50 luxury sedan, cameras and sensors to keep an electric eye on the road ahead and can automatically make minor steering adjustments to help keep a car centered in a lane. Combined with the latest adaptive cruise control systems that can operate in stop-and-go traffic, these cars are inching one more step closer to enabling autonomous driving, at least on the highway.

Likewise leveraging an array of imaging devices, the latest safety systems can automatically slam on the brakes to help avoid or at least minimize the effects of both forward and reverse collisions with other vehicles and obstructions in a car’s path. Available on the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover, Volvo ups the ante for 2014 with a feature that can help prevent unfortunate encounters with those on foot and riding a bike. Aptly, but not particularly creatively, named Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake, the system alerts the driver if a bicyclist or pedestrian suddenly appears in the vehicle’s path in city traffic, and can automatically apply the brakes if the motorist isn’t reacting quickly enough.

With gas prices remaining costly, and federal fuel economy regulations ramping up in the coming years, automakers are looking to new ways to help boost their cars’ mileage without adversely affecting their performance. Already many models are borrowing the so-called stop/start system from hybrid cars that shuts down the engine while at idle to avoid a situation in which the car essentially gets zero mpg. Mazda borrows another mpg-boosting system from hybrids in the 2014 Mazda6 it calls i-ELOOP (the name is short for “intelligent energy loop”). Part of a $2,000 option package on the car’s top model, it recovers kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost via braking and stores it to power the vehicle’s electrical components – including headlights, climate control and audio system – bypassing an alternator to reduce drag on the engine and thus save a nominal amount of fuel.

Some new systems are destined to find their way into mainstream models within a few years if only for their sheer convenience. For example, the new Kia Cadenza full-size sedan comes with specially treated side “hydrophobic” side windows that shed water to help preserve outward visibility in a downpour. The aforementioned Infiniti Q50 offers a so-called i-Key function that allows up to four motorists to customize a wide range of operating parameters, recognizing a user via his or her keyfob and automatically adjusting everything from seat, mirror, and climate control settings to radio presets and stored navigation destinations.
And as is usually the case, a few of the oddest new-car features seem to come from the “we did it because we can do it” school of automotive engineering. As an example, the new Acura RLX luxury sedan is able to keep the brakes engaged at a stoplight or train crossing for up to 10 minutes without the driver having to keep a foot on the pedal. Handy? Perhaps, but simply shifting the transmission into neutral or park has the same effect, and with no time limit.

In Pictures: The Hottest New-Car Features For 2014.
Similarly, the new Jaguar F-Type sports car features door handles that remain flush with the bodywork and deploy when touched or the car is unlocked via the key fob. Once the car is driven off, the handles retract back into the doors to leave a sleek aerodynamic surface for the sake of “design purity.” What happens, we might ask, should the car become snowed or iced over and the door handles remain retracted?

And then there’s one of the most buzz-worthy new features for 2014, the HondaVAC, which is a built-in vacuum cleaner that’s housed in the rear cargo area of the Honda Odyssey minivan (specifically, the $45,000 Touring Elite version). Developed in conjunction with the makers of the Shop-Vac, it comes complete with a replaceable filter, canister bag, attachments and an integrated hose that’s said to reach into every corner of the cabin. It’s able to operate continuously when the engine is running, and continue to work for up to eight minutes when the vehicle is turned off.

While we acknowledge that having an integrated vacuum cleaner can be handy, especially in a family minded model like the Odyssey that’s destined to become cluttered with candy wrappers and cookie crumbs, unlike amenities like the Mercedes S-Class’ hot stone massaging seats and heated armrests, this feature can largely be duplicated – albeit not as elegantly – by a 12-volt wet-dry vacuum from Wal-Mart for under $30.

Benefits Of Having Regular Automotive Repair

Chevrolet Car Parts Houston
Very few car owners actually go through the auto manual which comes with new cars. As time goes by, automotive repairs of your vehicle become very important. This is due to the fact that with regular use the different parts of a vehicle do not perform like they used to when they were in newer condition. Most US residents, including those living in cities like Tyler and Athens face high repair bills just because they did not service their vehicle in time.
Getting your car serviced every now and then has its benefits. Some of these are:
1. Less chance of high repair bills: If you notice that your car tires have become worn out or the car fluids are continuously leaking out or you regularly overlook the dashboard warning lights and still you neglect taking the vehicle to a mechanic, you may incur heavy repair bills when you finally decide to get your precious vehicle repaired. Better would be to do a regular check up of your car to avoid such heavy costs on automotive repairs at one go. It has been noticed that several US citizens, including those residing in cities like Tyler and Henderson have their precious cars checked on a regular basis.
2. More dependable vehicle: Nobody would like the idea of getting stranded in the middle of the road. Regular maintenance of your car, like different fluid checks or oil change will ensure that your car serves you for a longer life span.
3. Better re-sell value: A person who has his car well maintained will have a better chance of getting a good re-sell value for his car when he decides to trade it in. Nobody would like the idea of purchasing a used car for which the new owner has to pay a fortune to get it in a better working condition.
4. Environment friendly vehicle: Timely maintenance of your vehicle will ensure that it passes all emission tests. This will prove that your car is in perfect running condition. A car which does not blow out smoke and does not make any sort of sound while it is running would add to make this planet a lovely place to live in.

How To Repair Automotives Yourself?

Used Cars Houston
The idea of repairing your own car seems to be very exciting and at the same time challenging. This article helps you in not only overcoming this challenge but also helps you in learning a new skill set. You may be on a long drive when the car falls sick in the middle. It might be difficult to find a mechanic in the highway and during odd times. This might seem so interesting that you may opt to pursue this as your hobby and also offer timely help to your friends and relatives in fixing small repairs.
Now it’s time for us to dive into the subject. The automotive repairs may be classified into four categories. First one is the common problems that we face with our cars, which can be easily handled even by the starters. Second one is the electrical mending works, which should be handled bit carefully. Handling this would be the stepping stone for us to trouble shoot other electrical items. The Third one is the advanced fixes for which you need a thorough brush up of your mechanical knowledge. Last and final one is the regular maintenance work. Let’s discuss about handling them one by one.
Common Fixes
The common fixes include all the simple replacing jobs such as replacing the headlight bulb, fuel filter, exhaust pipe, brake disc, brake pad and fuel gauge. The bulbs, filter, pipe, disc, pads and gauge are readily available in the automobile market. You will need only few basic tools such as screw drivers, wrenches etc. so go ahead and replace all these items confidently.
Electrical mending works
The major percentage of the automotive repairs is the electrical mending works because most components of your car are either electrical or electronically made. The repairs that are to be mended in this category include
Making quick fixed in the basic wiring
Fix any faults in the electric fuse
It is necessary to know the basic wiring techniques and procedures to fix all the electrical mending works.
Advanced fixes
These kinds of repairs are not suitable for the starter. If you are well versed with common routine fixes, electrical mending works and the regular maintenance work then you can go ahead and proceed with the advanced fixes of your car. The advanced fixes include
Wheels fixing
Attaching car water pump
Fuel Injection System alteration
Troubleshooting the fuel tank
Replacing the brake line completely
Fuel pump alteration
Maintenance
It is the regular maintenance that keeps your car away from the major repairs. Some people might think that its utter waste of time and energy to perform maintenance tasks when the car operating fine. Simply changing the engine oil alone is not a complete maintenance task. The maintenance work differs from one season to another.
Seasonal Maintenance – during the spring season its necessary to keep the wind shield refreshed. In the summer season it’s essential to keep the coolant in your car on track.

Other routine tasks are spark plug reattachment, battery maintenance checking the air filter etc.

What You Should Do If Your Car Engine Overheats

Chevrolet Houston Dealership
It does not matter what type of vehicle you drive, or what year it was manufactured, during the hot summer months, it's common for vehicles to overheat. The first sign will be your car's temperature guage indicator starting to rise, and often times, you will notice your engine releasing steam or starting to smoke up. At Middle Country Automotive in Selden NY 11784, your safety is our top priority, especially during the sizzling heat of the summer months.
Here are some things to do if you notice your car engine overheating:
Turn the air conditioning off and turn on the the car's heater.  This will direct the energy away from your engine. Be sure to open your windows, because now you have hot air pumping into the cabin of your car, making it very uncomfortable for you on an already hot day. If this does not work, and you see the temperature is still rising, pull over when it is safe to do so, and turn off your engine. f you keep driving while the temperature is increasing, you can cause damage to your engine. If you require engine repair services, contact us today!
If you notice your engine releasing steam or starting to smoke up, pull your car over when it is safe to do so and turn your engine off. If you are comfortable doing so, pop the hood of the car. Dot not pop the hood until the engine has cooled. Do this only if you feel it is safe to do so. If you have no idea what you are doing or why your car may have overheated, call roadside assistance right away.
Be sure to check your coolant levels. If your coolant levels are low or completely depleted, you may have a leak. Call roadside assistance immiediately. If your coolant levels are at normal capacity, you may have a malfunctioning temperature guage. If this is the case, wait for your engine to cool completely. You can continue on to your destination, however be very cautious. Replace it with a new thermostate guage as soon as possible. A good rule of thumb is to have your coolant levels checked and topped off during auto inspections. Middle Country Automotive technicians are experts in auto inspection services in Selden NY 11784.

If it is of the utmost importance for you to keep driving, pull your car over and wait for the engine to cool completely. Twist off the radiator cap using a rag or glove. If you are not sure of what or where that is, refer to your owner's manual. Be sure to refill the radiator and reservoir with coolant. If it is absolutely necessary, you can use water. This is in no way a long term fix. This will keep your engine cool for just long enough for you to reach your destination. You will have to pull over and repeat this process if you notice that the temperature is increasing again. Be sure to bring your car to your mechanic as soon as possible before the situation turns into a need for costly repairs.

10 TIPS TO SAVE ON GAS

Houston Chevy Dealers
Don’t Let Lower Gas Prices Make You More Fuel “Inefficient”
OK, so gas prices are dropping, but they’re still expensive, relatively speaking. And with “cheaper” gas, drivers tend to care less about fuel efficiency. Not a smart move, says George Winkler.
As Owner & Proprietor of Winkler Automotive in Gaithersburg, Maryland’s top-rated independent service center, and an AAA approved and ASE Certified operation, one of the reason’s for Winkler’s success since opening in 1982 is its proactive approach to car maintenance and care.
Especially when it comes to fuel efficiency.
“People don’t realize the number one unnecessary car expense by far is fuel inefficiency,” notes Winkler.  “But fortunately, much of this waste can be corrected with simple measures – many of which don’t cost a penny!”
Thus, Winkler offers 10 tips on the most effective ways to cut down on gasoline guzzling – short of purchasing a more fuel-efficient car, of course:
1 – Check that lead foot . . . You may be in a hurry, but aggressive driving can lower your mileage by 33% on the highway and 5% around town.
2 – Observe speed limits . . . Mileage decreases rapidly when you are driving over 60 mph.  Every five mph you drive over that is like raising your gas price by 24 cents a gallon.
3 – Keep it light . . . Every 100 pounds you carry in your vehicle can reduce you mph by 2%.
4 – Avoid excessive idling . . . Idling gets 0 miles per gallon.  The larger the engine, the more wasted gas.
5 – Use cruise control . . . Maintaining a constant speed on the highway saves gas.
6 – Use overdrive gears . . . They slow your engine down, reducing gas consumption.
7 – Keep the engine tuned . . . A car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve gas mileage by 4% when tuned.
8 – Keep tires properly inflated . . . Under-inflated tires lower gas mileage.  You can improve your mileage by 3.3% by keeping them properly inflated.
9 – Use recommended grade of motor oil . . . You can improve mileage up to 2% by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade.
10 – Replace clogged air filters . . . In older cars with carbureted engines, a clogged air filter can improve fuel economy by 2-6% or more. (This does not apply to newer cars with fuel-injected, computer controlled gasoline engines).

As Winkler implores, pick just five of these to follow (at a minimum) – and ideally, all 10 – and you’re going to notice the difference in your wallet immediately!

5 Tips To Keeping Your Tires In Tip Top Shape

Chevrolet Tahoe Sugarland
Keys To Staying Safe When The Rubber Hits The Road
One of the most common requests at Winkler Automotive is new tires.
And George Winkler, Owner & Proprietor of Maryland’s top-rated independent service center, and an AAA approved and ASE Certified operation (located in Gaithersburg), is always quick to give his customers proactive tips in order to show up less often in need of new tires.
“Proper tire maintenance is so simple, and significantly prolongs the life of your tires,” advises Winkler.  “Plus it’s just downright safer to be diligent in caring for your tires.”
Thus, Winkler shares his five tips to keeping your tires in top top shape:
1 – Check tire pressure
Do this at least once a month and before and after any long trips. Check your owner’s manual for exact PSI, as it can vary from car to car. Be sure to use the automaker’s recommended pressure and not the maximum pressure indicated on the tires.  Plus, optimal inflation can improve fuel economy as much as 5 percent, according to Winkler.  And keep a gauge in your glove-box.  You can get them as most dollar stores these days.
2 – Rotate your tires (The Works package includes rotation – click here for coupon)
Every 6,000 to 8,000 miles is Winkler’s suggestion to his customers. Every tire will wear differently. On front-wheel-drive cars, the front wheels wear at almost twice the rate of the rear wheels. Rotating where the tires sit on the wheel helps achieve more uniform wear, which means consistent performance and longer tire life. Its an expensive cost, and one that will save you in the long run.
3 – Examine your treads
Winkler suggests making sure your tires have a tread depth of at least 4/32 inch (above the legal limit of 2/32-inch).  To check this, stick a quarter, Washington’s head facing down, into one of the tire-tread grooves. If any part of Washington’s head is obscured, you have at least that amount of tread.
4 – Align your wheels
Improperly aligned wheels can create rapid and uneven wear, creating a very unsafe situation.  A proper alignment will adjust the steering and suspension components to manufacturer specifications, making sure that the wheels are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other.  And again, another relatively inexpensive procedure – but one that’s well worth the occasional investment.
5 – Keep the deepest treads in the rear

As Winkler notes to those who may think this is counter-intuitive, deeper treads grip the road and channel water better, making the rear of the car less likely to hydroplane and fishtail. The result is that, while your shabby front tires may result in understeer, it’s easier for a driver to correct from such a condition than from oversteer resulting from worn rear tires.

Auto service aims to promote car care in Kotzebue

Chevrolet Camaro Houston
Instead of curing the ails and ills of people, he finds himself nursing and healing automobiles. And, like a doctor, he believes in the age-old adage of "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."
Especially when 'cure' usually means 'a lot of money out of one's pocket' to get an automobile back on the road.
For Lee, the founding of his latest business venture, Kotzebue Automotive Services, is about making life in rural Alaska a little better for everyone. Better auto care and maintenance will mean a more dependable, longer-lasting vehicle for residents, and less money out of their pockets.
"We saw that there was a need for high-quality automotive care, especially using the industry standards used in the Lower 48." Said Lee, who has spent more than three decades operating businesses in the Kotzebue area. "Life for cars out here is hard. There isn't a lot of maintenance, so we're trying to work with our customers to learn about their cars, and the options they have."
One thing Lee is serious about is educating Kotzebue residents on the need for preventative maintenance. A little prevention can eliminate costly cures later on.
"A lot of them (car owners) could save an arm and a leg if they would do a little preventative maintenance," he said. Repairing a minor problem when it is first discovered can prevent a more costly procedure later.
In an effort to provide high-quality care, Lee established KAS in March, creating a 2-bay garage behind the NIHA building that encompasses almost 3,000 square feet with two car lifts and electronic diagnostic systems. He installed a high-tech CompuStar service - making KAS the northern-most dealer utilizing the system, hired master mechanics and established working partnerships with automotive dealers in Anchorage to extend the businesses' services and resources.
"We want to create a place where people can come and get high-quality automotive care," said Lee. "We're trying to offer better options for the customers. Many of the people who live here don't have a lot of disposable extra income, so we're trying to create a way for them to take better care of their cars and still survive."
In addition to bringing in mechanics and systems to diagnose and repair automobiles, Lee has also spent countless hours educating his customers on the value of purchasing extended warranties.
"We've been trying to encourage them to do some preventative maintenance, and how to take advantage of their warranties and insurance," he said. "We've found that a lot of people don't really understand how to use the warranties and what their insurance offers. I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out about them. That has been one thing we have tried hard to work on."
Lee also said his staff has created an on-site financing program to help local residents with automotive repair/maintenance costs. Customers approved for the program will be able to make repairs and pay for them in small payments over a period of time.
Lee said some repairs may still have to be outsourced to Anchorage specialists, but that in many cases, local residents may find that working agreements his team has created may save them money.
Lee also said Kotzebue Automotive Service is also one of the first businesses in the northwest Arctic to promote environmental safety. The business is a collection site for used automotive engine oil, and also a collection site for used deep-fried oil generated by local restaurants.
"It is a good thing," said Lee. "We have set up to take the used motor and deep-fried oil. Instead of having to bury that stuff, which isn't really good for the land, or have the ravens come in, we collect it."
Lee said his staff has actually taken the "green" approach a step further, utilizing the used deep fried waste oil to heat their shop during the winter months.
"We purchased a waste oil boiler that can burn waste oil and deep fryer oil," he said. "It wasn't an easy process to set up, but after a few months of tweaking it, we managed to get it to working pretty efficiently."
Lee said Kotzebue Automotive Services could expand in the future to offer other services that could promote better automotive health.

"It has been a challenge to get it started," said Lee. "But I think it will be great."

How to Communicate for Better Car Service

Chevrolet Cruze Ltz Houston
Today's cars, light trucks, and sport-utility vehicles are high-tech marvels with digital dashboards, oxygen sensors, electronic computers, unibody construction, and more. They run better, longer, and more efficiently than models of years past.
But when it comes to repairs, some things stay the same. Whatever type of repair facility you patronize--dealership, service station, independent garage, specialty shop, or a national franchise--good communication between the customer and the shop is vital.
The following tips should help you along the way:
Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs or service.
•Read the owner's manual to learn about the vehicle's systems and components.
•Follow the recommended service schedules.
•Keep a log of all repairs and service.
When you think about it, you know your car better than anyone else. You drive it every day and know how it feels and sounds when everything is right. So don't ignore its warning signals.
Use all of your senses to inspect your car frequently. Check for:

•Unusual sounds, odors, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings.
•Changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels.
•Worn tires, belts, hoses.
•Problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations.
•Note when the problem occurs.
•Is it constant or periodic?
•When the vehicle is cold or after the engine has warmed up?
•At all speeds? Only under acceleration? During braking? When shifting?
•When did the problem first start?
Professionally run repair establishments have always recognized the importance of communications in automotive repairs.
Once you you are at the repair establishment, communicate your findings.
•Be prepared to describe the symptoms. (In larger shops you'll probably speak with a service writer/service manager rather than with the technician directly.)
•Carry a written list of the symptoms that you can give to the technician or service manager.
•Resist the temptation to suggest a specific course of repair. Just as you would with your physician, tell where it hurts and how long it's been that way, but let the technician diagnose and recommend a remedy.
Stay involved...Ask questions.
•Ask as many questions as you need. Do not be embarrassed to request lay definitions.
•Don't rush the service writer or technician to make an on-the-spot diagnosis. Ask to be called and apprised of the problem, course of action, and costs before work begins.
•Before you leave, be sure you understand all shop policies regarding labor rates, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment.
•Leave a telephone number where you can be called.

How to Take Proper Care of Your Transmission

Chevrolet Service center Houston
You probably already know that the automatic transmission of your car is one of the most critical components that keeps your vehicle moving forward. And something as intricate as that needs proper maintenance in order for it to keep going for the long haul. Automatic transmissions are a little more complex than its manual counterparts so it needs a little more care than one might expect.
As you should already know automatics rely heavily on transmission fluid in order to keep it running strong. The fluid is critical in that it lubricates and cools the many various components that lie within your vehicle and it is important to maintain that fluid at a reasonable consistency. Old, dirty fluid can cause a number of problems including slipping gears, loss of acceleration, and of course failure. The last thing you want to have is a transmission failure that can cost a whole heap of money to repair let alone replace. The biggest reason why transmissions fail or develop problems is because owners forget to maintain it on a regular basis.
Heat is your worst enemy. Heat is the main cause for short car lifespans and I will explain why. Transmissions rely on fluid to keep it running smoothly. As I have said fluid is what lubricates and cools the many parts in your car. The harder your transmission works the more heat it produces and the more heat it is exposed to causes it to eventually develop problems. When fluid temperatures rise above 215 degrees Fahrenheit varnish forms; higher and seals harden, plates slip, seals and plates burn out, and carbon forms. If fluid temperature rises above 315 degrees Fahrenheit than expect your car to last less than 800 miles. If kept at 175 degrees Fahrenheit than your car will be able to drive over 100,000 miles. See how much difference that makes? Even a 20 degree drop from 220 to 200 degrees in fluid temperature can double the lifespan of your transmission! So of course this is why fluid is critical to the health of your transmission.
Probably one of the most common and most effective ways in prolonging your transmission is by getting a fluid change as recommended by the car manufacturer. Most automotive experts suggest getting a fluid change every 30,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. It really all depends on your driving habits and the type of fluid used though. A fluid change can be done by yourself but it is recommended that you take it into a repair shop where the technicians are knowledgeable in car maintenance. The service is quite simple and consists of dropping the pan to remove the old fluid as well as to inspect for contaminants. The filter gets changed accordingly and fluid is then added to the proper levels. The main reason why you want to bring it into a repair shop is because the technicians will know if there is a problem with the transmission by looking at the old fluid. However a fluid change does not insure that ALL of the old fluid is removed. A lot of fluid can still remain in cooler lines and the torque converter which is why the next method explained is generally a better option.
Another common car maintenance routine is to get a transmission flush. A transmission flush is where all the fluid is removed and the system gets thoroughly cleaned. The process involves connecting a pump to the cooler lines to remove all the old fluid. New fluid is then replaced at the same time so that the old fluid is not able to contaminate the new fluid. A flush is much more effective than a change because ALL of the old fluid is replaced. This allows the new fluid to do a much better job at cooling and lubricating the transmission. Costs for a flush can run a little higher than a fluid change but many say it is well worth it for how much it helps to extend the life of the tranny.
If you are not sure how long or how many miles it has been since you have had a fluid change or a flush then a good way to know when to get your car serviced is by checking the fluid. Automotive experts recommend checking the fluid level and condition every month regardless of whether you are experiencing problems or not. You can find many detailed tutorials online about how to check the fluid but I will give you a quick synopsis about how it is done.
The process goes something like this. For most makes and models the car needs to be running in order to get accurate results. Usually the car is taken for a drive in order to warm up the engine and fluids. Transmission fluid actually expands quite a bit when it is warmed up so checking the fluid while the car is cold can have misleading results. Once the car is warmed up it should be put in park or neutral on a level surface and then the hood needs to be popped. Most cars have a fluid dipstick near the transmission; you can find where it is located in the owner manual. After you have found the dipstick you will want to remove it and wipe it on a clear paper towel or a rag of some kind. This will be where the color and condition is inspected. Normally fluid should be a bright, clear red. A dark red or light brown are okay colors if the fluid has been used for some time but darker colors can mean it needs to be serviced, especially if it is a dark brown. Colors closer to black may mean that your transmission has a problem. Also if the fluid smells burnt then this can also mean that it has problems. If there are metal shavings or large particles floating about then that may mean that the filter has failed to do its job or it may mean bigger problems. To check whether the fluid has oxidized wipe some of it on a paper towel, if it does not spread then this means it has oxidized. If the fluid shows any of those symptoms - dark colors such as brown or black, a burnt smell, large particles or metal shavings, or fluid oxidation -- then it means your car needs to be taken in to be serviced. If everything seems okay then at this point you will want to check the fluid levels. Simply re-insert the dipstick after wiping it down and then remove it again. The fluid should be somewhere between the two marks. If it is below the second mark then you will want to add the specified transmission fluid suggested in the owner manual in small quantities, checking periodically until the levels reach in between the two marks.

If you stay on top of maintenance procedures then your car will last much longer than average. It is vital to take care of your car unless you want to face expensive repairs or the purchase of an entirely new car later on. Be sure to properly maintain your car on a regular basis because it works tirelessly for you, the least you can do is to keep it in good running condition.

The importance of cooling system service

Used Cars Houston
Your cooling system is an extremely important system in your vehicle.  It’s job is to keep the engine cooled so it doesn’t overheat.
Here’s how it works.  Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, runs through your engine’s cooling system.  It moves from the radiator to the engine and back again.  The water pump function is to keep that cooling fluid moving.  The radiator’s job is to allow cooler air to bring down the temperature of the coolant.
What is the coolant?
Your coolant is a mixture of coolant and water.  Each car manufacturer specifies exactly the mixture and type of coolant that is needed.  The coolant’s job is to stop that water from rusting and corroding the internal parts of your cooling system.  Of course, it also helps keep the coolant cooler.
Where’s the problem?
When the coolant gets older, it starts to lose its protective properties.  It begins to allow the water to eat up your internal parts.  Water pumps fail, radiators fail and more.  These failures can lead to disastrous engine problems.  Additionally, if there is a leak in your cooling system, you risk the same problems.
How to solve the problem?
Simple.  Just get routine cooling system flushes when your car manufacturer recommends it.  Most car makers today recommend about every 24,000 to 30,000 miles.  Consult your owner’s manual for proper intervals.

It’s also important to point out that we do inspect your coolant to make sure it’s protecting you well.  If it’s not, we’ll bring it to your attention.  If you have any questions about your cooling system or any part of your car, please feel welcome to give us a call.

Proper Fluids for Your Vehicle

Used Trucks Houston
The automotive professionals at Harrell’s Auto Service would like to give FAYETTEVILLE motorists an update on some of the things happening in automotive fluids. You know, cars are becoming more sophisticated everyday – and fluids such as, oil, coolant and transmission fluid are becoming more specialized at about the same pace.
The Fayetteville do-it-yourselfer has to be pretty careful so that they do not actually harm their vehicle with the wrong type of fluid. That is why so many NC car owners rely on the advice of their considerate Harrell’s Auto Service technician to not only get the correct family of fluids, but to suggest the formulation that is best for their car and their driving habits.
Let’s start with engine oil. Fort Bragg motorists who have been paying attention, will have noticed a number of new oil weights on the NC scene in the last several years. Modern engines are built to much tighter tolerances and have very complicated valve trains. The oil must be thin enough to lubricate complicated parts when the engine is cold. The weight of an oil is expressed in terms like 20-W-50 or 5-W-30. The automobile manufacturers recommend the weight of oil for each vehicle they make. The recommendation is based on engine design. Your FAYETTEVILLE service center will know what weight your manufacturer recommends – and it’s important to follow those recommendations. Your technician at Harrell’s Auto Service can also offer suggestions for special formulations and can tell you all about conventional and synthetic oils.

Antifreeze,
or engine coolant, is another area that has become more complicated. For a long time, auto manufacturers only recommended a couple of different types of coolant. Now, several different formulations are needed because of the high-tech materials that automobile manufacturers are using to build the cooling system. Using the wrong type of coolant can actually void your warranty, so you want to get that right.
Transmission fluid is becoming specialized as well. New transmission designs have particular requirements that require specific formulations. Recently, new, somewhat confusing, standards for brake fluid have also been released.

Not too long ago, there was a good chance that all of the vehicles at your FAYETTEVILLE house would use many of the same fluids. However, as automotive technology advances, the array of basic automotive fluids you need will grow. And, some of the formulations will cost a little more. Fortunately, Harrell’s Auto Service will continue to update their training to keep pace with technology so that you’ll get the right fluids your car needs. It’s all part of the commitment we make to your driving peace of mind.

Putting car crash disputes on the RECORD

Houston Chevy Dealers
A fatal crash between a Ferrari and a taxi, followed by a video clip that showed the accident in detail, has been the talk of the town for weeks.
The footage, which added fuel to public outrage, was also a wake-up call for motorists.
And just last Saturday, another video clip, which showed a Lexus beating the red light and hitting a taxi at the same junction, surfaced.
Both incidents underlined the usefulness of onboard camera recorders that can provide video evidence in case of disputes following an accident.
Such recorders have been available here for some time. They can be bought from websites such as Gmarket or shops such as ZMC, which sells automotive accessories.
ZMC's business development manager, MrKenneth Low, said they have stocked such digital recorders since 2008.
Since the Ferrari-taxi crash, ZMC has seen up to a 100 per cent increase in queries about such recorders, said Mr Low, who would not give precise sales figures.
'The majority of our customers have experienced an accident, which prompted them to install these cameras to protect themselves in case of future accidents,' he said.
One customer, he recalled, got into an accident just a day after he had the recorder installed in his car. The customer was stationary at a traffic junction when the vehicle in front reversed into him. The video footage helped the customer to avoid any dispute.
Most members of the Automobile Association of Singapore are aware of these recorders, said MrEric Ow, a senior corporate communications executive with the association.
'Nowadays, our members are more tech-savvy and they are aware of the usefulness of car recorders. They usually call to ask for recommendations and prices,' he said.
Typically, an onboard videocam recorder is plugged into the car's cigarette-lighter socket and begins recording to a microSD or SD card when the engine is started.
Devices that capture full high-definition (HD) resolution at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels are popular, said Mr Xavier Chong, 33, managing director of DVR Security Xuite, which distributes the Itronics brand of car recorders. 'These HD cameras are popular since they can clearly capture the licence-plate number from cars which hit and run, even at night,' he said.
However, HD recording can take a toll on storage capacity because file sizes are large.
Most of the recording devices will write the newest footage over older recordings when a storage card is near capacity. Some are even equipped with Global Positioning System features, which will geotag the video clip and pinpoint where the incidents happened.
These cameras also double as surveillance systems and track movement around the vehicle when they are connected directly to the car's battery.
Mr Justin Ong, 33, a project management director with a marketing agency, had his car fitted with a recorder six months ago and firmly believes in its usefulness.
'I have been driving since 2001 and the number of bad experiences I've encountered on the road got me thinking that a car recorder would be a great purchase,' he said.
He has been fortunate not to be involved in any accidents since then, but there have been close shaves.
'Since I have videos of those near misses, I would share them with my friends on Facebook. It is exactly these types of near misses that reaffirm my decision to buy and install a car recorder in my car,' he said.

Digital Life gathered four such car recorders capable of 1,080p recording and checked out how they performed on the road.

How to keep leather interior looking like new

Chevrolet Houston Dealership
Leather vehicle interiors come at a premium, so it makes sense to keep it looking sharp and help it last the life of you vehicle.
After all, seats get the most wear and tear – and share of spills – but don’t forget the armrests and door panels. They too get a lot of action from passengers.
Keeping leather interiors like new is not difficult. Many manufacturers make a wide variety of products – from pastes and spray-on products to wipes – to help motorists keep leather vehicle interiors in excellent, long-lasting condition.
According to experts, two considerations affect the kind of car-care product that’s right for the leather interior in your vehicle:
• New interiors or newer interiors showing little soiling can be cleaned and conditioned using a one-step cleaner-conditioner product.
• For older interiors and those scuffed or dirty, use of a single-step leather cleaner followed by a single-step leather conditioner will work best.
Automotive interior leather cleaning and conditioning products use similar components in their formulas, so manufacturer choice should not be difficult.
“In new cars, leather has coatings on them to help protect against moisture spills and wear and tear, but at the microscopic level the leather pores are flexible,” said Mike Pennington, director of Training and Consumer Relations, for car-care products company Meguiar’s.
“When you cleaning leather, you’re wiping clean its protective layer applied by the OEM. Cleaning clears away oils, grime and dirt that get onto its surface from our clothes and skin. Leather cleaners are typically gentler for this purpose than are other types of all-purpose cleaners or vinyl cleaners.”
Once a cleaner has done its work—be sure to work over armrests and other interior leather items—the conditioner application helps keep the leather’s pores flexible. The right conditioner will not add false color to the original leather and will help keep the leather soft and supple, looking its best.
Pennington advised against using rub-in pastes or colored cleaner-conditioners on premium leather seats having perforations (for heat and A/C). These products can clog these pinpoint pores and discolor. Consult the product’s manufacturer if in question, he said.
Now that the interior is clean, conditioned and protected again, be careful as you enter and leave the vehicle so you keep the leather nice and fresh. Pennington offered these “Not to Do” tips:

  • Be alert to sharp objects in rear pants pockets or items on belts that can scratch or even puncture leather
  • When loading a SUV, lay down a towel or tarp before stowing items, such as bicycles having sharp objects that might otherwise scar or scratch the leather
  • Keep leather wipes in the vehicle for quick spot removal from coffee and food spills
  • Do not wear soiled clothes while driving, which can transfer grime into leather seats
  • Wait until your destination before lathering arms, legs and torso with sun screen

Seven tips for 13 dirty summer problems

westside chevrolet
A clean vehicle in summer is like having a well-manicured lawn. It must be tended weekly to look any good, and there’s always some new problem that crops up.
The world outside your garage presents a constant battle against the 13 most common summer offenders—dust, bug goo, environmental pollutants such as pollen and soot, sprinkler water spots, paw prints, fingerprints, bird droppings, brake dust, mud, sap, soda and coffee spills, road tar and dog slobber.

No wonder the family jokester writes “Wash Me” on the rear windshield.
"Frequent car care is easy car care," Mike Pennington, director of training at Meguiar’s, Inc. "If you don’t get that stuff off your vehicle, it could bond and in some cases scratch or etch the surface."
There are a lot of rights—and wrongs—when it comes to protecting the finish on your vehicle. Moreover, modern vehicles often have a clear-coat finish that adds depth and shine to the painted surface including wheels.
Neglecting contaminants can cause oxidation, dulling and rough surfaces.
Frequent car care and wax protection helps prevent contaminants from bonding to paint, Pennington said. Yet, simply wiping it down with a towel is not recommended and can scratch painted surfaces.
"Choosing the right products is almost like being a doctor. You need to prescribe the right ‘medicine,’" Pennington said.
According to Pennington, the first steps involve quick analysis:
  • Evaluate the surface. Are there rough spots? Tree sap? Caked on dirt? Oxidation?
  • Decide what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to restore shine? Creating high gloss polish? Or simply maintaining a clean-looking car?
  • Use the right techniques. What type of toweling and accessories are you using, and, what are the proper steps for protecting your car?
Use products specifically intended for cleaning vehicles, Pennington said. Cheap towels, t-shirts and diaper cloths can cause swirls or microscratches. Dirt particles trapped by fibers can act like sand paper across the surface.
Quality tools can help maintain the shine and avoid scratching. Also, car care products are available for specific purposes such as removing bug and tar build-up.
Maintaining the surface of your vehicle helps extend the paint life and improves vehicle resale value. Pennington offered the following recommendations:

  • Sheepskin or microfiber wash mitts. They pull dirt away from the surface and into tightly woven filaments.
  • Good car wash. It loosens contaminants and helps avoid scratching. Warning: Avoid dish soap because degreasing agents can remove wax, damage paint finish and degrade rubber.
  • Quality wax to place a thin film between the environment and the clear coat (carnauba formulas and the latest in synthetic polymer technology are common).
  • Cleaners that act on below-surface defects; clay bars that remove above-surface contaminants.
  • A chamois, quality terry cloth towel, or even a micro fiber drying cloth with a thick nap for drying.
  • Tire cleaner and a stiff brush to improve tire appearance.
  • Wheel cleaner to remove corrosive brake dust and road grime.

Smart Automatic Cars can Reduce Fuel Consumption Efficiently

Chevrolet Cruze LTZ
Cars that can move automatically have the ability to reduce the fuel consumption, as said by Nady Boules, the director of General Motor Electric and Controls Integration Lab.
Many carmakers are working on development of such automatic cars.
Fully automatic cars will be more rationally designed, which will make them lighter in weight and thereby help to decrease fuel consumption.
These automatic cars will have further possibility of controlling acceleration in a favorable manner and this will be a plus point to reduce fuel consumption as fast start and tough braking can result in 40% increased fuel consumption. Boules said that 10-15% of fuel consumption could be reduced by the space of four meters from a moving truck. Moreover, vehicle-to-vehicle communication can also work in reducing fuel consumption by coordinating traffic intelligently and decreasing accidents.
Parking a car automatically could save fuel by eliminating the need for drivers to circle around the parking lot in order to find the free space. Here, the concept of car’s automatic parking to the nearest parking space will work, after dropping off the owner from the car, even if parking space is located half a mile away. Similarly, at the time of leaving, the owner will send a signal to the car through smart phone or any other device and car will automatically pick him up. Smart vehicles will need less maintenance and thereby can reduce fuel consumption by 30%.
When the signals are red, the car will automatically switched off and it will be switched on just before the green signal.

Boules reported that cars with partial attention to the vehicle’s steering wheel and the accelerator will probably come by the end of this decade and fully automated cars will come by the next decade but certain new rules and regulations will be enforced.
